Having no formal hierarchy, Baptist churches formed associations linking church members and resources. Baptist churches in northeastern Ohio first belonged to the Beaver Baptist Association based in western Pennsylvania. In 1817, the Grand River Baptist Association became the first in the Western Reserve. Associations organized around geography, issues, and projects. Some Baptist associations, such as the Rocky River Baptist Association and the Geauga Baptist Association, embraced missionary activity. Bible distribution was also common in the Western Reserve, through groups such as the Ashtabula Bible Society. Brickner (1892-1958) was a New-York born Zionist, educator, orator, and Rabbi of Anshe Chesed Congregation (1925-1958) in Cleveland, Ohio. He was involved in numerous local, national and international organizations, both Jewish and non-sectarian. To realize his goal of promoting and enhancing Jewish family life he created a Young People's Congregation at Anshe Chesed. He also directed the congregation into a more traditional Reform observance and the Zionist movement. Brickner was also extremely active in local Jewish organizations, including the Cleveland Zionist District, the Bureau of Jewish Education, and the Jewish Welfare Fund. Nationally, he served on the Executive Committee of the Zionist Organization of America, chaired the Committee on Chaplains of the Central Conference of American Rabbis during World War II, and in 1943, was selected by the National Jewish Welfare Board to serve as executive chairman of the Committee on Army and Navy Religious Activities. He was the son of Justus Tyler Herrick (1801-1882) and Caroline J. Herrick (1808-1847). The family moved to Twinsburg when he was a child where he worked on the family farm and attended school. He graduated from Williams College in 1858 and Rush Medical College in Chicago, Illinois, in 1861. After medical school he came to the Cleveland area to work at the U.S. Marine Hospital under Dr. Martin L. Brooks. Dr. Herrick was commissioned assistant surgeon and then promoted to surgeon with the 17th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. He was captured at the battle of Chickamauga and spent two months as a prisoner of war at Libby Prison. After his exchange he served with General William Tecumseh Sherman's Atlanta campaign and march to the sea. After the war ended, Dr. Herrick returned to Cleveland to practice medicine.
